SUSPICIOUS FISHUS

My wife leaves town for a couple of weeks, and this happens…My first foray into making a sculpture.

YEP, STILL KICKIN’

Just a quick update of some recent things that have been occupying what little free time I have anymore. I’m working feverishly on items for the Texas Council of the IFFF’s Expo coming up in June. Look for more on that later, but I would love to shake your hand at the event, so stop by the Destination Texas Fly Fishing page and get all the details.

First up…I joined Techshop, maybe the coolest place ever! Did I mention they have over a million dollars worth of tools at your disposal? These were cut using a CNC Waterjet cutter. This is just the beginning of the awesome that will come out this place.

Then I drew some stuff. I spend so much time in a digital realm that it’s always freeing to pick up a pencil and just ‘sketch’…

BIG WOOD AND TROUTFEST

As the title implies, this post has to do with some of my latest projects. Big Wood, was theme for my showing at Troutfest… A couple of weekends ago I took my first shot at selling my art in a public setting. My online audience, via Twitter, Facebook and Instragram have been an incredible source of inspiration and support over the last couple of years. But, I really wanted to get out and more importantly, get local. GRTU’s Troutfest seemed like the perfect setting for this endeavor.

Troutfest is a great event, with a focused group of like minded folks, that just want to share their passion for fly fishing in a beautiful setting along the Guadalupe River. I considered my first showing a success, I sold half of what you’re looking at in the picture below. And the contacts made may prove very fruitful in the long run. And in a strange turn of events, Dave and Emily Whitlock bought a print and an iPad stand from me! It was a great 2 days, made a lot of new friends and look forward to seeing them and meeting more, at future events.

I DONT TIE FLYS

Something came over me yesterday… we made a mad rush through the tool department at Home Depot and a new drill press, a router and a bunch of other cool play toys jumped in my basket!

And then this happened…My first attempt at a Fly Tying Caddy. I’ve planned on making one of these for a year now, but was lacking the tools to make it happen…Not any more! Here is a backwards progression of the process:

Not bad for a first stab at it. There is room for improvement, but I’m happy with how it turned out! And don’t laugh, but that is the whole of all the fly tying tools I have to my name. I DON’T TIE FLYS!

MONTANA TROUT

Welcome to 2014 everyone. I for one, am glad that 2013 is in the rear view mirror and is disappearing like a West Texas sunset. With that said, 2014 is an empty canvas, just waiting to be painted…So lets get started!

This weeks art entry:

Montana Flag - Bull Trout
Montana Flag – Bull Trout

Social media friend @steadyflyfisher, check his site SteadyFlyFisher.com, asked me to create a Bull Trout piece that represent the Montana Flag. So I decided to on something a little different. The Montana flag seems to be a matter of artistic endeavor on a field of blue. So I went with the design above. Each aspect of the center flag design is a separate piece cut out on my jig saw and hand painted. The fish itself is 28″ long and 11″ tall. The dry fly is hand cut from a beautiful piece of granadillo wood and attached by screws to the body.

42 INCHES

It’s been a while…So, today I have 2 art entries:

42 Inches of Wood Trout!

42 Inches of Wood Trout!

“Take a chunk of plywood and cut a big fish out of it…” That was my only plan when I bought that piece of birch plywood at Home Depot. Painting the Texas flag and The Dry fly on it what was just for fun! Finished it up last night, and tonight I hung it up on the outside of the shed.

The iFin

I’ve been tinkering in the woodshed again…

The iFin

The iFin

I’ve had this idea for a while, but finally think I’ve mastered the concept. The genius behind this – The standard iPad / (other) tablet  holders are rather limited to only having one, maybe two, angels to hold the tablet in. This one can hold it at any position you desire. Cut from a beautiful piece of Grenadilla wood, I picked up at Woodcraft in Austin. It’s a third rendition prototype, but it works flawlessly, in the landscape mode, but not so much in portrait. I’m working on that…

And at the request of The Fiberglass Manifesto, I made a traditional style stand, based on the Tailing Red business card holder idea. I took the tailing fin, laid it flat, cut a groove at a  15 degree angel for his iPad Mini. Carved it and painted it in a TFM Comrade theme. I also cut a slot on the back side that can be utilized as a business card holder. It’s made from an awesome plank of Aripari wood.
